Painter Lynn M. Smith has been busy “making Pittsburgh beautiful” for almost 20 years now, but she got her start working in some of the least stunning buildings in Cincinnati. “I worked for the City’s Commission on the Arts, and I started painting murals in state-run hospitals, nursing homes, that sort of thing,” she recalls. “They had those awful gray cement block walls, and they just looked dreadful.”Smith received a degree in fine arts from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and with her home mural and interior arrangement business, Interior Artistry, Smith frequently uses her painting to add life to spaces that need a little something (or a whole lot) extra. And, not only can Smith’s sort of interior designing add a big dash of color and vibrancy to a space, it can also make rooms appear larger and with heigher ceilings. In addition to murals, she takes a lot of jobs doing what she calls “specialty painting,” adding accents and finishes to walls, floors, and furniture. “I’ve done painted floors that look like custom inlaid stained floors, and it’s just elegant,” Smith says. In taking on new projects, though, she notes that she has to take into account the individual décor of a home. “Maybe a mural wouldn’t work in that house, but something like custom floors would.”It’s working on that case-by-case basis that provides Smith so much enjoyment. “It’s not the same stuff every day,” she says with a laugh. “I always have interesting projects, and that’s what I love about what I do.” @ Lynn M.
