WTAE-TV News Anchor Andrew Stockey came to Pittsburgh in 1995 as a sports reporter. Always a Chicago Bears fan, Stockey, born in Chicago and raised in Simsbury, Conn., says he became a Pittsburgh Steelers fan after getting to know the players and the people who make up the organization.
Stockey started running in February when his friend, a registered dietitian, suggested he run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon with her. He came in at 2:05. On his second try at the Chicago Half Marathon, he left his partner “in the dust” by shaving off 18 minutes from his time. Now the 41-year-old former high school running back and catcher makes the time for an outside jog daily.
The Workout: Stockey hits the river trails on the South Side and North Side for six-mile treks during the week, rounding out the routine with longer eight-to-10-mile runs on the weekend.
Gear: Stockey runs in shorts and a T-shirt and carries an iPod. For our shoot, the first cold and windy day of fall, he showed up in gray warm-ups.
Fitness Tip: “If it hurts, stop.” He doesn’t remember where he first heard it, but it still sticks with him.
Most challenging exercise: Spinning. Years ago, Stockey took a class regularly, but now he sticks to running. “[Spinning] is the worst,” he laughs. “It’s the most physically draining thing you can do.”
The Diet: Stockey anchors the 11 p.m. news, so he doesn’t hit the sack until 2 a.m. Of course, he says the habit he developed of playing Sony PlayStation 3 for an hour or so doesn’t help. Stockey wakes up between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and has orange juice and fruit. For lunch it’s salad and then maybe sushi or salad again from the nearby Giant Eagle sometime between the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. show.
Weakness: Buffalo wings and blue cheese dressing.
His inspiration: Stockey says that simply knowing that he will be seen on television isn’t always enough to keep him in shape, although now that he’s filmed in high definition, that helps motivate him to exercise regularly. He adds that staying fit “Allows me to wear the kind of clothes I like to wear. And it’s nice to be this age and have people think you’re in your early 30s.”
Unwinds: Stockey likes to spend the day golfing, though he doesn’t do this nearly as much as he would like. “It’s a treat to myself,” he says.
