WHIRL Magazine Editor in Chief Christine Tumpson announced the first annual ONE WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo this morning on KDKA-TV Morning News’ WHIRL Wednesday. The sunrise-to-sunset day will feature yoga classes, workshops, seminars and vendors in support of healthy living on Saturday, July 28 at Point State Park. Impressive is one word that comes to mind when thinking of Melissa Stein. I was pleased to meet and talk with her this month for our May issue’s Corporate WHIRL profile, and learn about how along with the ATHENA Awards, Stein and her colleagues are promoting professional excellence beyond the workplace. On a day like today, there’s no better way to beat the heat than with a cool cocktail.

Talk about a childhood dream come true! On the day of my interview with Pittsburgh Pirates President Frank Coonelly, GM Neal Huntington, and Director of Player Systems Development Dan Fox, I got to go to PNC Park a little early and see the park as I’ve never seen it before — quiet and completely empty. It was really cool to see Roberto Clemente’s old jersey hanging outside the conference room, and one of the World Series trophies in the main lobby. At the end of the day, I learned a lot about the team I grew up watching, and the faith that our front office has in the future of that team is projected in the story. Think Moneyball was just a movie? Think again! The Pirates are on the cutting edge of the age of sabermetrics in Major League Baseball.

In case you haven’t felt it in the air, summer concerts, festivals, and all over musical debauchery has begun for 2012. Right off the heals of the Tupac hologram at Coachella, I am totally amped to head over to the South Side to see Deer Tick at The Rex Theatre on Monday, April 23.

The boys of Deer Tick are back on the road supporting their acclaimed 2011 record, Divine Providence, which is definatly a staple on my playlists for Summer. In February, the band released a free EP titled, Tim, which is comprised of four unreleased songs taken from the same sessions as Divine Providence. In honor of Earth Day (April 22), this month’s issue has a consistent green theme — including local foods and composting, environmentally sound architecture, and more! I explored the world of sustainable fashion in Style News, and I’m pretty psyched with the result. Of course, anytime there’s an opportunity to go shopping, the WHIRL girl certainly embrace it, and this time, there was the added bonus of shopping for a good/green cause. First up: Earth (and body) friendly cosmetics, such as Tela Organics Body Butter and a Green Apple Simple Sugars Scrub. Next, we accessorized. Check out our “Global Goods” still life, including Fair Trade Alma Souls belts, handmade turquoise bracelets, and gorgeous green bags. P.S. My favorite piece is the floppy hat made from recycled paper. It’s eco-friendly, trendy, and protects my face from UV rays. Love it!
